Mission Statement
LARC will provide supports and services that promote quality, dignity and choice and will assist individuals with developmental disabilities achieve outcomes of independence in their lives.
Our Purpose
LARC is a private not-for-profit organization dedicated to providing developmentally disabled adults with an opportunity to work, live and participate in their community. Originally formed as a school for mentally retarded children in 1956 (the Lansing School of Special Education), LARC currently provides day training and work activity to approximately 90 adults from the Southern Chicagoland Suburbs and Northwest Indiana.
A person with a developmental disability has been diagnosed with mental retardation or has suffered an injury which severely limits his or her mental abilities.
According to the ARC, a national organization on mental retardation, between 6.2 and 7.5 million people in the United States have mental retardation. Mental retardation is more prevalent than Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida and total blindness. It is estimated that one in ten families is affected by mental retardation.
Governed by a thirteen member volunteer board and staffed by highly qualified professionals, LARC's goal for each developmentally disabled individual is that they reach their highest potential in their jobs, at home and in the community.
